Seismic and Electrical Geophysical Characterization of an Incipient Coastal Open‐System Pingo: Lagoon Pingo, Svalbard

Whilst there has been a recent appreciation for the role of open-system pingos in providing fluid-flow conduit through continuous permafrost that enables methane release, formation and internal structure these ubiquitous permafrost-diagnostic landforms remains unclear. Here, we combine active-source seismic measurements with electrical resistivity tomography to investigate structural subsurface characteristics an incipient pingo actively emitting within glacio-isostatically uplifting fjord valley Adventdalen, Svalbard. Wavefront inversion refractions delineate spatially heterogeneous active layer, whilst deeper reflections identify lithological boundaries between marine sediments underlying shales at ∼68 m depth (p-wave velocity ∼1,790 ms−1). Low geometric mean inverted resistivities 40–150 Ωm highlight dominance saline permafrost, elevated (∼2 kΩm) occur close groundwater spring heaved areas around pingo. Based on our results, speculate segregation ice dominates structure, given absence notable contrast characteristic injection is typically expected early formation, provides most plausible geomorphic agent local fine-grained sedimentology. Our results thereby indicate sediment grain size moisture availability can provide important controls formation. This study shows coastal, environments may form differently, implications localized its permeability gas reservoirs consequent release.
